Dr Ian Gibson, Chief Executive Officer
Dr Ian Gibson has extensive experience at executive level R&D management. He has a strong track record in the research, development and commercialisation of new technology across a broad range of electrical engineering, computer science and digital imaging.
Previously Ian was a Division General Manager at CiSRA, the Australian R&D lab for Canon. There he built research capability over several years to deliver original, world leading technology into a wide range of Canon's major product groups.
Ian has a PhD from the University of New South Wales in Computer Science, a BE in Electrical Engineering (Hons) and a BSc, is on several industry advisory boards and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland.
Mr Rodney Harrison, Products and Solutions Manager
Rodney Harrison leads the Products and Solutions Division at Intersect and has carriage of the following:
- defining Intersect’s catalogue of products and services, and working with other divisions to ensure their successful delivery;
- creating and delivering custom solutions for customers;
- investigating and realising new business opportunities; and
- building and maintaining business relationships with other organisations.
In his previous role as Intersect's Engineering Manager, the Engineering Division grew in size and capability becoming a professional, full lifecycle, software development arm of the organisation. Rodney has a BSc from UNSW and more than 25 years experience in the delivery of software engineering projects and the management of engineering organisations.
Dr Joe Thurbon, Member Services Manager
Joe Thurbon is our Member Services Manager currently located at Southern Cross University. He has a research background in logic and diagrammatic reasoning, and has practiced software engineering for almost 20 years. Prior to joining Intersect, Joe worked at CISRA, Canon's Australian R&D company, researching and developing machine learning approaches to image processing problems. Joe has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Sydney in computer science and psychology, and a PhD in computer science from the University of New South Wales.
Mr Shane Youl, IT Manager
Shane Youl is Intersect’s IT Manager and coordinates a number of large infrastructure projects. Shane worked for the R&D arm of Canon (CiSRA) for 13 years, including six years managing the IT Services department and most recently as Deputy General Manager of Corporate Services. Prior to that Shane worked at CSIRO as a data analyst and in Computing Services / IT. Shane has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mathematics from RMIT Melbourne.
Ms Georgina Edwards, Engineering Manager
Georgina Edwards drives the technology development, direction, execution and delivery of Intersect’s projects. She is responsible for the successful translation of architecture into design and implementation by our developers. Georgina has 12 years practical experience as a developer in a production software environment and is experienced in software development best practice including test driven development, continuous integration, Agile and the software development lifecycle. Before joining Intersect in 2009, Georgina was a senior developer at Macquarie Bank. Georgina has a BE (Hons) in IT & Telecommunications from the University of Adelaide.
Dr Derek Van Dyk, Director of Strategic Development
Derek works with the research sector and government agencies to increase the delivery and impact of Intersect’s shared infrastructure and services to government. This includes a focus on identifying local data sets, often held by government agencies, that can be effectively engineered for research use across universities, government and industry. This he sees as a major opportunity to harness the considerable power of the research sector to address local and national issues.
Before joining Intersect, Derek spent eight years in NSW Government as a director of science and innovation policy groups. He has a background in commercial research, a PhD in biotechnology and proteomics from UNSW, and was a founding partner in the start-up biotech Minomic International.
Dr Markus Buchhorn, Strategic Initiatives
Markus Buchhorn engages with State and Federal Government agencies on behalf of Intersect's members, and assists with strategies for building Intersect's business. Markus has been a leader in eResearch for over 15 years. Markus was previously Director of ICT Environments at the Australian National University, and was an advisor on NCRIS Platforms for Collaboration program, the Australian National Data Service, and a member of the National e-Research Architecture Taskforce (NeAT). He has been involved in national infrastructure programs such as APAC, (Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing), for High Performance Computing services and GrangeNet for high performance network services, and continues to be actively engaged in a wide range of national eResearch initiatives such as RDSI and NeCTAR, as well as international eResearch initiatives.

Gehendra is a CCNA and ITIL certified systems administrator with several years of experience in the IT industry. He holds a Bachelor of IT in network security from Charles Sturt University with distinction and has hands-on experience in system administration, network security & troubleshooting in an enterprise environment. He also demonstrates strong skills and knowledge of Linux, system logging and monitoring technologies, scripting, Microsoft Active Directory (LDAP) and networking.
Stuart Allen has worked in the IT industry in a wide variety of roles for over 16 years. He spent two years working on the Meta Access Management System (MAMS) project at Macquarie University where he was involved with the design, development, and implementation of various software projects.
These applications are an integral part of the infrastructure provided by Macquarie eLearning Centre of Excellence, (MELCOE) for the enhancement of the Australian Access Federation. In addition to this Stuart was also heavily involved in running technical workshops to assist institutions in the adoption of federated technologies with particular focus of the Shibboleth software suite.
Prior to joining Intersect, Ilya was working as Research Officer at the Centre for Language Technology at Macquarie University. While there he was involved in a variety of projects, which included areas such as Natural Language Generation, Information Extraction, and Sentiment Analysis. Ilya holds a BSc(Hons) in Linguistics and Computing from Macquarie University.
Jared Berghold has a research and development background in computer visualisation, interactivity and enterprise architecture. Jared has practiced software engineering for over eight years and prior to Intersect worked at iCinema, a research centre at UNSW, working on interdisciplinary projects with a focus on interactive and immersive narrative systems. Before this, he worked at Avolution and CiSRA, the Australian research and development lab for Canon.
Jared has a BE/BA (Hons) in Computer Systems and International Studies from the University of Technology, Sydney.
Robbi is an Honours student studying B Adv Science (Geoscience) / B Arts (Environmental Studies) at the University of New South Wales, currently completing Honours in Geographic Information Systems and Geoarchaeology. Robbi is working as a Casual Tester for the Federated Archaeological Information Management System (FAIMS) project at Intersect.
Johan brings a wide range of industry experience to Intersect after running his own software development company for 17 years. He has worked in a variety of fields including business management, livestock, agriculture, data warehousing, biometric systems and the hospitality industry. He is an experienced business analyst who helped to design and develop more than 60 business solutions for national and international clients. Johan is also an Oracle DBA with extensive database design experience.
Most recently Johan worked as a senior business analyst on the International Livestock Registry at the Agricultural Business Research Institute at UNE, providing agribusiness information services to more than 80 breed associations worldwide. Johan is the eResearch Analyst for the University of New England.
Rowan is liaison for ANDS National Collections Program and previously worked on a range of ANDS and Intersect projects at The University of Sydney. He has twenty years experience in diverse roles (analyst research librarian, collection manager, project manager, technical developer) working with researchers in the university, and government sectors in Australia. He has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Literature (University of Newcastle), and Postgraduate Diploma of Information Management (University of New South Wales).
Siobhan is a PMI and PRINCE2 certified project manager with over 10 years project management experience within the software development, telecommunications and product development areas.
Peter Bugeia is the eResearch Analyst for the University of Western Sydney.
Peter has 30 years IT experience across a wide range of industries including medicine, banking and finance, and media. He has worked in commercial, not-for-profit and public sectors and has held various roles from Senior Software Engineer and Test Manager to Project Manager, Enterprise Architect and Business Analyst.
Jeff is Intersect's eResearch Analyst at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). Jeff has a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Queensland, and started his career conducting research in the fields of cancer, molecular genetics and embryo development in both Australia and the UK, prior to moving into the management of large biological data assets (gene sequence, images, etc) through the establishment of a UK-based international database of gene expression and anatomy. Prior to joining Intersect, Jeff was employed at the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), primarily involved in biology/medicine focused projects.
David is a Software Engineer with over 20 years of experience, mainly on research and development projects in disciplines as diverse as silicon chip design, telecommunications and radio astronomy. Originally from the UK, he has recently moved to Australia after a four year stint in the US. David holds a BSc in Computer Science from Edinburgh University and a MSc in Financial Mathematics.
Anne Cregan has a diverse background in a range of academic disciplines. Her commercial IT background encompasses programming, business analysis, data mining and senior level management, as well as project management and co-ordination.
Anne has a doctorate in Computer Science from UNSW, specialising in semantic web technologies. She is on the Program Committee for several semantic Web-related conferences. She has a BSc (Hons) from the University of Sydney.
Karen El-Azzi has over 10 years experience working in the commercial IT environment. Karen started her career as a software engineer, before spending the last 6 years managing a wide range of software development projects. Karen has a BSc in Computer Science from Macquarie University.
Pierre is in second year studying software engineering at UNSW. He was chosen as a Tech Head for the UNSW computing student society for 2013.
Jake graduated in 2010 from the University of Birmingham (UK) with a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng Hons) in Computer Interactive Systems with Business Management. He also has a National Diploma in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, (triple distinction).
Fayette Fung reports directly to Intersect's CEO and the executive team. She liaises with internal and external stakeholders and her role includes PA duties, as well as general administration tasks. Before joining Intersect in 2009, Fayette worked at University Churches with international students, assisting the Senior Minister and looking after a large group of students. Fayette was previously a Senior Personal Banker with ANZ bank, helping the manager build the team and achieve targets as well as providing customer service.
Fayette has a BA in Psychology and a BComm in Banking and Finance from the University of Queensland.
Gabriel is a software engineer recently migrated from Argentina. He has 10+ years of experience working in software development across government and large scale public and private organisations. He holds a Bachelor and a post graduate degree in computer science. Gabriel is working on the HCSvLab (Human Communication Science) project.
Shahla Ghobadi is Intersect's eResearch Analyst at UNSW. Shahla Ghobadi has a BEng in Industrial Engineering, a MSc majoring in Information Technology Management, and a Doctorate in Information Systems from the University of New South Wales. Prior to joining academia, Shahla worked as a business analyst in manufacturing industry. Her research covers a broad range of topics including collaboration in multi-party software development teams, knowledge management, group conflicts, and online activism. She has collaborated internationally as a program committee member /reviewer in business and information systems conferences and journals.
Alan is Intersect’s primary contact point between ANDS and NSW universities. Alan is responsible for ANDS Outreach at the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, the University of Newcastle and the University of New England. He has 25 years experience working in commercial IT environments. Over the last 12 years he has primarily assisted in the running of project offices and programme management offices overseeing a wide range of both IT and non-IT projects. He was the Projects Administrator for the National eResearch Architecture Taskforce (NeAT) and in 2011 coordinated the development of systems related to health data linkage for both NSW and South Australia.
Alistair is a project manager with 25 years experience managing IT projects with distributed teams across the project lifecycle. He has worked over the last ten years developing enterprise security systems, including digital certificate management, Single Sign-On and identity and access management systems. Most recently he has worked on data and metadata management software for the Australian Synchrotron and ANSTO. He has a Bachelor of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering from Monash University. Alistair is managing the All-Sky Virtual Observatory project which is a collaborative effort between Astronomy Australia Ltd, the National Computational Infrastructure, Swinburne University of Technology and Intersect.
Elaine has worked previously as a project manager and business analyst and has an extensive IT background. Prior to Intersect she worked for Qantas on a large Oracle financials project. She has also worked for a large shared services organisation servicing a number of NSW Government agencies providing HR, IT and finance solutions and services. Elaine has a BSc Degree in Computer Systems and Software Engineering from the University of Limerick in Ireland and is also a certified PRINCE2 Practitioner.
Jeremy is Intersect's eResearch Analyst for the University of Sydney. Jeremy's PhD studies in Linguistics (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen, Netherlands and Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany) focused on using experimental data to complement analyses based on natural language corpora from audiovisual archives. As a researcher he specialised on Whitesands, a small undocumented language, and he conducted field research in rural Vanuatu where he lived and worked with indigenous communities to record their day-to-day lives in order to investigate what was special about their language (a grammatical system called switch reference). He has also worked in software development and infrastructure projects for digital humanities researchers at The Language Archive (Netherlands) and The Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (Australia). Prior to joining Intersect, Jeremy was employed as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Netherlands).
Leonie joined Intersect in 2008 and provides communication and special project support. Leonie worked in the digital humanities as a project lead/ manager for 15 years, variously for the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, Fairfax and Brainwaave Interactive. Before joining Intersect she founded the Dictionary of Australian Artists Online for a national consortium of universities and cultural institutions led by UNSW. She delivered communication solutions for the Australia Council, Australian Heritage Commission and the private sector, and worked extensively as a journalist and broadcaster. Leonie has a BA from the University of Sydney.
Matt graduated from the University of Sydney with a BSc in Computer Science in 2012
Shuqian graduated from the University of New South Wales with a BSc in Computer Science in 2010.
Experienced in Ruby on Rails, Shuqian has worked on a variety of projects including HIEv, HCSvLab, UNSW Data Capture & Integration (ACData) and the Work Observation Method By Activity Timing (WOMBAT) project - Intersect's first Android app. Shuqian is also the technical lead for Intersect's first iPhone app - RICS Leasa, available at the Apple iTunes Store
Stanley is a third year student of Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) at University of New South Wales. He demonstrates strong technical skills working on Linux terminals, Perl, C, Java programming language and is familiar with Shell and Python. Stanley is working as a casual software tester with Intersect
Mohammad holds an achievement based career with over nine years experience in the IT industry, a Bachelor of Science in Computing & Information Systems and exposure to various aspects of data management and scripting languages. Mohammad’s highly advanced and specialized skills in IT services are complemented by former employment as the Support Manager for Micros - Fidelio Australia Pty Ltd, and earlier appointment as the Product Manager for the major developer of enterprise applications. Mohammad uses his experiences as a Senior Research Assistant with Macquarie University, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) qualifications and extensive background working within large scale IT environments for assisting researchers in finding solutions for critical data migrations requiring expertise in data modelling, systems design and liaising with various nodes of the RDSI.
Robyn holds a B App Sc (Biomed) with postgraduate IT studies from UTS and has worked in hospital and industry clinical and research laboratories for 10 years in Sydney and London. In the last 12 years she has worked as a business analyst and project manager in development teams across a range of industries including education, health, tourism, insurance, banking and government in Sydney and in Auckland, New Zealand, touching on technologies ranging from mainframes to mobile apps. She is currently studying a Master of Brain and Mind Sciences at Sydney University and has a great interest in the potential of super computing and large data stores in transforming research and our understanding across all disciplines.
Sean has over 8 years experience as a software engineer in the telecommunications/eResearch industry. He specialised in areas such as VoIP, intelligent policy routing, VPN, networking metrics and visualisation appliance. He also spent three years working as a Linux/Unix system administrator and developer for the China Railway Communication Group. Sean holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University.
Veronica undertook her BCST, (Bachelor of Computer Science and Technology) at the University of Sydney, with First Class (Hons) from UNSW. Her first job was in Canon's Research and Development lab CiSRA, working on embedded java applications for photocopiers. She then became a firmware engineer at Cochlear, working on the behind-the-ear sound processor. Veronica has now returned to object-oriented design and high level language programming.
Joachim is an eResearch support specialist with extensive experience in supporting High Performance Computing. He studied chemistry and mathematics and worked as a researcher at several universities (Technical University of Braunschweig, University of Kiel, University of Freiburg, University of Southern California at San Diego and University of Barcelona) in chemistry and physics. Joachim’s research areas include statistical physics, polymer physics, protein folding, chemical reactions on surfaces, computational chemistry and models of spreading diseases. He also worked as the head of the IT group for the Bureau of Statistics in Germany.
Ingrid has twenty years experience in diverse roles (project manager, repository manager, business analyst, librarian) working with technology in the university, cultural and government sectors in New Zealand and Australia. She has a Bachelor of Arts (English Literature) and Masters of Library and Information Studies (Victoria University of Wellington). Ingrid is a liaison for ANDS for NSW universities for community building.
Dr Cameron Maxwell has a broad development and research background. As a developer and designer he has been the recipient of two innovation awards. More recently Cameron has consulted as an enterprise architect on national and international enterprise systems. His research at UTS pioneered the optimisation of software, system and enterprise architectures. He has also collaborated internationally on the development of next generation cloud and grid computing architectures.
Patricia works with Intersect to gather, shape, and tell the stories about Intersect's work and the research it supports. Patricia has 20 years experience working in information technology and research organisations, universities, and libraries in Australia and the United States, including CAUDIT, the University of Queensland, the University of Sydney, Macquarie University, and Carnegie Mellon University. She is a performance storyteller and a member of the Australian Storytelling Guild (NSW), Toastmasters International, and the Australian Computer Society.
Khanh is currently in his fourth year at the University of Sydney, studying for a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Computer) and a Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics and Computer Science). Previously a casual tester, he is now currently working as a casual software engineer at Intersect.
Schemek is a Java developer with over 12 years multinational experience in commercial IT environment. Before joining Intersect, Schemek was working as Senior Software Engineer for WestGlobal.
Schemek has a BSc in Computer Science from AGH University.
Sridhar has an MA in Computing (Networking) from University of Western Sydney and certifications as a Cisco Certified Network Professional and a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator.
During his time at Intersect, Glenn has been a system administrator and technical lead for the SURE project. He is now the Infrastructure Architect for the RDSI and NeCTAR Cloud projects. He thinks about how to design, build and manage massive storage and huge cloud systems. Prior to joining Intersect, Glenn ran his own computing business for more than 20 years with clients ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies, state and federal government departments. He has been instrumental in delivering a huge variety of projects and consulting. Glenn has a BE (Mechanical) from UTS, earned back in the days when it was called NSWIT.
Joel is in his fourth year at the University Of New South Wales studying Civil Engineering and History. He works as a Casual Tester for the Federated Archaeological Information Management System (FAIMS) project.
Sanjeet is an ICT professional with over ten years experience in a broad range of systems, networks and security technologies. Previously Sanjeet worked in IT Services at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji where he had the role of Systems Analyst/Programmer & Team Leader in the Systems and Networks Section. In his past roles, Sanjeet has led and mentored teams of engineers and was instrumental in delivering major projects across multiple sites and countries. At Intersect, he is tasked with overseeing the deployment and operation of significant IT infrastructure services to ensure continuous and high level performance.
Nicholas has worked as a researcher, developer and teacher in computer science. Before joining Intersect, he was a researcher in multimedia security at the University of Wollongong and the University of Calgary, and a software developer in the Digital Repository Team at the Queensland University of Technology. As well as working at Intersect, he teaches computer science at Victoria University Sydney.
Nicholas has a BE (Computer Systems Hons) and a BSc from the University of Queensland, a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sydney and Garduate Certificate in Communications from Griffith University.
Luc has a BSc majoring in Computer Science, a BA (Hons) majoring in Philosophy and a Doctorate in Philosophy from the Australian National University. Before joining intersect, Luc worked as a programmer, technical writer, and architect of education, search, and metadata-related software in a variety of settings both locally and internationally.
As an eResearch Analyst, Luc aids researchers at the University of Canberra to apply IT to their research. He helps them access high performance computing, virtualisation and data storage services and provides training in data exploration, cleaning and visualisation. He assists the university to strategise around eResearch services and opportunities.
Theeban received his BE in Software Engineering and BSc in Mathematics in 2007 from the University of New South Wales, (First Class Hons). His first job was working for a MMORPG company Bigworld developing for the client side game engine. He then moved onto developing e-learning solutions at 2and2.
Mairéad is Intersect’s eResearch Analyst at the University of Newcastle. Mairéad has 14 years experience working in the IT industry across a wide range of industries including automotive, dotcom start-up, telecommunications as well as software and games development. She has worked in commercial, not-for-profit and public sectors and has held various roles from software test manager, software test developer to project manager and business analyst. Before joining Intersect in 2012, Mairéad was the Test Manager at Life Without Barriers in Newcastle.
Ibrahim has a Computer Science degree from the University of New South Wales. He is currently working as a Test lead and QA Engineer. He has been involved in many Intersect projects such as Genomics Data Analysis, ASRB (Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank), WOMBAT, Technique Finder, Biomechanics, Exsite9 etc.
Daniel graduated from the UNSW in 2010 (First Class Hons) with a Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering. He then joined Axe Group, a leading IT company in the insurance domain, as a Graduate Associate, where he worked within the R&D team using Java, Spring, Struts, Hibernate and front end technologies such as CSS. He is experienced in Java coding/development and wants to develop his career in the development space.
Desiree oversees the day-to-day running of the Intersect office and manages the Executive team, drawing on her extensive experience in Administration. Prior to joining Intersect, Desiree worked as the Marketing and Customer Service Manager for a Registered Training Organisation and was responsible for all marketing and customer service responsibilities on a national level.
Cindy Wang has recently completed her PhD in artificial intelligence at ANU in Canberra where she also earned a BS (Hons) in Computer Science. Her research improved scalability, speed and memory usage in multi-agent path finding, as well as providing completeness guarantees, thus bridging a gap in previous approaches. Cindy also has a BA/BSc double degree in French and Computer Science from the University of Auckland. She has previously worked for ANU/NICTA in two summer research positions. Cindy is currently working on the All-Sky Virtual Observatory project as a software engineer.
Michele (Kali) has over ten years of experience testing & quality assuring websites and software. She has tested projects for the NSW Rural Fire Service, the Department of Defence, and the Department of Lands, as well as for other organisations including Ticketek, TrueLocal & Hays Recruiting. Vincent is a third year student pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and Software Engineering degree at UNSW. He also works as a casual academic at UNSW and teaches software modelling techniques and project management.
Darren is an IT professional with over 10 years experience working in a wide variety of environments. As a senior storage engineer, he brings extensive experience in implementing new technologies and storage environments with clients such as RBS, Deutsche Bank, UBS etc. He has recently migrated to Australia from London.
Nina was previously a systems administrator, and has experience in various areas of IT including web design and content management, Siebel CRM and business intelligence. She has a BSc in Information Technology (major in internetworking and applications) from the University of Technology, Sydney, and is also a Microsoft Certified IT Professional.
Spencer joined Intersect in 2009 as a casual user interface designer, and works on a wide range of projects. Spencer has a Bachelor of Design Computing from the University of Sydney.
Sean graduated in December 2009 from the University of New South Wales with a Master of Information Technology degree and received his Bachelor degree in software engineering from Jilin University China in 2007. Sean has worked on a variety of projects from planning to release over the past 4 years.
Daniel has a BSc in Information Technology from University of Technology, Sydney and eight years of software engineering experience using a wide variety of languages, toolkits and platforms. He spent six years focused on developing applications to monitor, report and test quality of service for VoIP telephone networks, and two years developing state-of-the-art way finding kiosk platforms which have since been installed in many leading Australian shopping centres.
Simon Yin has a background in High Performance Computing and electronics engineering. Before joining Intersect in 2009 he worked in HPC/IT administration at the UNSW Centre for Quantum Computing Technology (CQCT). Prior to that he was an electronics design engineer for Cochlear Ltd.
In his current role, Simon is the system administrator for Intersect's super computer Orange and a resource for HPC sites at University of Western Sydney and NSW Office of Environment & Heritage.
Marc is a user interface designer, with experience in web, print and interface design. Previously Marc worked for two years as a designer at the medical advertising agency, Ogilvy Healthworld.
Marc studied at Billy Blue College of Design, and holds a Bachelor of Communication Design from Swinburne University.
