Innovation Projects

Intersect undertakes “Innovation Projects” as a part of the services provided to our member institutions. The Innovation Committee is appointed by the Intersect Board to oversee and govern the process of devising, selecting and executing projects for the Innovation program.

The Innovation Committee:
1.    bases the selection process on a strategic view of the eResearch needs of NSW and Australia. This will draw on:

a.    NSW & national research priorities;
b.    needs of researchers at member institutions;
c.    the value and quality of the supported research.

2.    Devises projects that meet the needs of researchers across institutions and even across disciplines.
3.    Selects projects to provide benefits fairly across our member institutions.

The Board and the Innovation Committee determine appropriate resourcing for innovation projects. The aim is to provide 3 to 5 projects per annum. A part of the strategy is to complete projects serially in order to realise benefits for the research community in a timely and measurable manner.

In order to effect this, a project creation process has been approved by the committee. An overview of the process can be seen in the diagram below:

In 2009, the first innovation project selected was the database and web portal for the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank. Details of the ASRB project are included elsewhere in this report.

The second project selected for execution is the Genomic Data Analysis project, which began in late 2009 and will complete in March 2010.
