Business Analyst

Intersect is a pivotal part of Australian research infrastructure.  We provide robust, innovative and collaborative technology to support world-class research at member universities and other organisations.  Intersect delivers storage and compute platforms, application products, data services, custom engineering, expert consultation and training programs to thousands of researchers every year.  

The Business Analyst role is exciting and challenging. The successful candidate constructs and supports software solutions that will enable our customers, researchers, to undertake and deliver research outputs.  

This position requires a flexible individual with strong technical expertise, a drive to deliver high quality outputs, a history of successful delivery in a team environment and excellent communication skills.

The team's work varies greatly from project to project, one day you could be mapping requirements for a genome sequencer, the next, scoping out a secure, scalable data catalog to be used by researchers all over the world.

Having said this, the core responsibilities are to:-

  • Make wise technical decisions, continually improve our engineering culture

  • Identify, review and assess technology, services and systems relevant to each project

  • Build prototypes to test concepts and/or prove design and technology requirements

  • Analyse and profile systems to determine problem areas and deliver solutions

  • Comply with engineering and project management procedures and processes

  • Communication with clients, stakeholders and project teams

  • Managing project scope from concept to delivery

  • Gather business requirements from a variety of academic and commercial clients, analyse needs as relevant:

    • Technical focus: Brings a broad and deep understanding of technology
    • Elicitation: Discovering the underlying business needs to be addressed through conversations with stakeholders.
    • Analysing Requirements: Organising, specifying and modelling the requirements to ensure completion and un-ambiguity.
    • Specifying Requirements: Documenting requirements and writing user stories in a format that can be shared and understood by the stakeholders.
    • Validating and verifying requirements: Ensuring the requirements map to the real business need

 

You will be ideally suited to our role if you have the majority of the following skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Computer Science or equivalent

  • An understanding of software development life cycle

  • Experience as a software engineer

  • Experience with Agile development methods

  • Exposure to Ruby on Rails, Java, Javascript, Php, Python

  • Some web services knowledge & experience – definition, configuration, deployment and security

  • Knowledge of other web-related technologies

  • Knowledge of software testing procedures

  • Experience with analysing complex ICT requirements, preferably within an academic research environment

  • Proven ability to liaise, and to understand and manage the needs of broad and complex stakeholder groups with diverse viewpoints

  • Ability to architect and deploy effective ICT solutions
