Members

Intersect has nine university members: the University of Sydney, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Macquarie University, the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), the University of Newcastle, Southern Cross University, the University of New England, the University of Wollongong and the University of Western Sydney.

Intersect provides support for the State’s leading researchers. Intersect also works in the national context as the NSW member of the Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS); and by collaborating with the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) and the Australian Access Federation (AAF).

Case Studies

University of Technology, Sydney

UTS’ Dr Lynne Turnbull and UTS eResearch Analyst Luc Small with outputs from the optical microscopes at the UTS Microbial Imaging Facility, including high resolution imagery from one of only two commercial DeltaVision OMX 3D-SIM TM units in the world.

UTS eResearch Analyst Luc Small works with researchers to determine their research- specific ICT needs; provide direct advice and support for eResearch; facilitate access to Intersect’s services and engineering portfolios; engage constructively with the IT Division and the Research and Innovation Office; and act as a conduit to the various national eResearch bodies (ARCS, ANDS etc).

Intersect is, for instance, helping the Centre for the Study of Choice (CenSoC), within UTS Faculty of Business by sourcing IT equipment, assisting in making purchasing decisions and with remote helpdesk support. This supplements the support already offered by the Faculty of Business IT and UTS central IT.

University of Sydney

University of Sydney eResearch Analyst Dr Anne Cregan shows Dr Julie Cairney the AMMRF Technique Finder Intersect has developed.

Much of eRA work involves user requirements analysis: working with researchers to elicit needs and convey that to the technical team at Intersect. Our University of Sydney eRA has undertaken user requirements analysis and technical feasibility studies on a range of work including the Australian Microscopy & MicroAnalysis Research Facility project work.

University of New South Wales

Dr Natalie Twine at the Ramaciotti Centre for Gene Function Analysis (above) worked closely with Intersect on the development of the Genomic Data Analysis project. GDA helps experimental scientists manage the data and design of their experiments. This includes wet-lab experiments like tissue sample preparation, next generation sequencing and base calling, and tertiary analyses such as Blast searching. Experimental scientists in genomics face two specific challenges. The volumes of data are enormous, and their experimental designs are subject to continual change. GDA directly addresses both of these issues.

eRAs can help configure software, or find someone who can: our UNSW eRA Dr Clare Sloggett also helped set up the data processing pipeline on the Ramaciotti Centre’s Illumina Gene Sequencer.

University of Newcastle

NSW Minister for Science and Medical Research Hon, Jodi McKay MP launched the Australian Schizophrenia Bank project at the University of Newcastle in February 2010 (above) saying, "This research bank allows for a greater level of collaboration among the many hard working researchers and clinicians across Australia who search for ways to deal with schizophrenia and for those who support people suffering from the condition".

The Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank is managed by the Schizophrenia Research Institute's University of Newcastle group. Intersect created, according to ASRB Manager, Dr Carmel Loughland, “a secure commercial grade system that will revolutionise the way schizophrenia research data is collected, stored and disseminated in Australia”.
