Intersect involved in NeCTAR projects
NeCTAR is currently negotiating 23 successful projects, selected from more than 80 project proposals submitted last November. One third of all proposals received, worth $23 million, are progressing to the contract negotiation phase.
Intersect was involved in 19 proposals, eight of which have gone forward, being 4 eResearch tools and 4 virtual laboratories.
The 23 projects under negotiation include 5 Virtual Laboratories in the fields of astronomy, environmental change/weather science, humanities, characterisation and genomics; 15 eResearch Tools across a mix of disciplines and 3 Research Cloud proposals. More at http://tiny.cc/1tg41
SA NT Datalink “Next Generation linkage systems”
Intersect provided project management services for SA NT DataLink project from June 2011 to date, during its formative and design stages.
The South Australia and Northern Territory Data Linkage Consortium (SA NT DataLink) is a joint venture consortium of government, non government and university stakeholders in South Australia and the Northern Territory which serves the health and human services data linkage needs of South Australia and the Northern Territory. In addition to health data, SA NT DataLink will link education, housing and community services data.
SA NT DataLink, which is a node of the NCRIS funded national Public Health Research Network (PHRN), has initiated the Next Generation Linkage System (NGLS) project to upgrade their existing linkage systems and develop new Client Services systems.
A new research dataset metadata repository is being developed by Uni SA Library IT. The system will include the capability for researchers to submit online requests for linked data and monitor the progress of delivery of the data to them. A new Clerical Review system has also been designed which will deliver significant new capabilities for linkage units and represents an evolutionary step in the development of PHRN linkage systems. Development is now underway and is scheduled for completion mid 2012.
MeCAT project completed
Intersect has completed work on a metadata management project for neutron beam instrument data at the Bragg Institute, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation.
The Bragg Institute now has a system with upgraded workflow, increased automation and improved access to the experimental data produced by the instruments.
Dr Nick Hauser of the Bragg Institute’s Neutron Beam Instruments Project said, “All data created while running experiments on our instruments can now be stored securely, along with its associated metadata. Principal Investigators now have secure access via the Internet to their experimental data and can manage access to this data. Users can search for all experimental data accessible by them. This includes data belonging to them and any publicly available data”.
The project is part of a broader initiative involving the Australian Synchotron and VeRSI, and is supported by the Australian National Data Service (ANDS). ANDS is supported by the Australian Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy Program and the Education Investment Fund (EIF) Super Science Initiative.
National forum of eResearch service providers
Intersect and the other state-based eResearch service providers are convening a forum aimed at strengthening national eResearch, to be held in Sydney on 20 February.
The forum is particularly relevant in a period when new national RDSI and NeCTAR services are to be established and the Strategic Roadmap for eResearch Infrastructure evolves. The forum is open to all interested parties.

HPC Resource Allocation round opens 11 Feb
The next round of resource allocations for HPC resources is about to start. The call will open 11th February and remain open until 25th February. Allocations will be made for access to both McLaren and NCI facilities for the period from 1st April to 30th September 2012.
Applications are made online at http://www.intersect.org.au/hpc-resource-allocation
New users, including from smaller institutions, non-traditional HPC disciplines as well as research students, are encouraged to use the HPC facilities.
