The University of Sydney is a founding member of Intersect, and has been a member since 2008.  Along with UNSW, the University of Sydney is one of Intersect's two largest members.

eResearch Analyst

Dr Anne Cregan is Intersect's eResearch Analyst for the University of Sydney. The university's ICT eResearch group manages the university's relationship with Intersect.  In the first instance, researchers should contact
E: eResearch@sydney.edu.au
to discuss any eResearch needs they may have.  Intersect will be engaged by the ICT eResearch department where appropriate.

eResearch Projects

Intersect has assisted the University of Sydney with a number of software development projects to date.

Completed Projects:

  • Breast Cancer Microscopy (funded by the Australian National Data Service) provided management, processing and internet sharing of microscope-generated digital images.
  • Health News has provided internet access for approved researchers to health-related free-to-air television video clips collected by the Australian Health News Research Collaboration (AHNRC).
  • History of Aboriginal Sydney provided a Drupal website delivering historical content to schools and the public.
  • Playground provided an online database enabling storage of a wide range of media relating to a study of the effect of active outdoor play on primary school children, and allows collaborative access to the data for cross-institutional project collaborators.
  • Rainfall developed a web form for grain farmers to upload rainfall data files documenting the amount of rain their farm received, so that the Grain Growers Association can predict local seasonal climate.

Projects in progress:

  • AMMRF- Platforms for Collaboration (funded by NeAT) is addressing data management needs for the data-intensive imaging community and has provided a tool for finding and accessing AMMRF research techniques and instruments.

Projects about to commence:

  • Flow Data Flow: a project which will provide a toolset to aid the management and cleaning of time-series sensor data.

Upcoming Projects:

The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) is funding a number of projects at the University of Sydney which will commence in 2011. These include:

  • FieldHelper: a tool to assist researchers in the field to manage digital information collected on site.
  • Metadata Stores: a facility to centrally store and provide data about university researchers and their research.
  • Agriculture and Environmental data capture and deposit
  • Astronomy (SKAMP) data capture and deposit
  • NSW TARDIS Node for crystallography data
  • Microscopy data capture and deposit
  • "Seeding the Commons" activities to make digital and physical research collections held by the University of Sydney more visible to researchers inside and outside of the university.
